As local Cambridge locksmiths, we have seen many new faces move into the city and the surrounding areas, having completed numerous lock changes and security surveys for the local residents. However, as lockdown hit and restrictions were put in place around moving house, we couldn’t predict the effect this may have on the housing market and were doubtful we would be welcoming many new residents into the city for a while. How wrong were we!
A recent Cambridge News article has described the post-lockdown housing market as ‘frantic’, according to Martin Walshe, director of Cheffins in Cambridge. Whilst there have been expectations that the housing market would be hurt drastically, it seems like it’s flipped the other way with a surge in enquiries.
Walshe told Cambridgeshire Live:
“We haven’t seen a market this competitive in years and we expect it to get busier still as the stamp duty slash starts to take effect. It can’t be denied that lockdown really emphasised the need to move for many, particularly those who were considering upsizing or leaving London for the commuter belt and we expect this to continue, particularly as workers are told they may not be going back into the office until next year”.
With the changing attitudes towards flexible working, it seems prospective home buyers are reconsidering their priorities and looking to move to commuter cities, such as Cambridge. The surge in enquiries has also led to increased house prices, with the region experiencing an annual price increase of 2.5%.
